Well, here it is. 500 college pitchers. 100 bonus guys after that. I’m spent. I also hate the formatting of this, so don’t be surprised if this sentence is later edited out after I go through and manually number each player while beautifying the statistical lines.

- Oklahoma JR RHP Jonathan Gray: 89-93 FB, 94-97 peak; good 80-81 SL; good 80-85 straight CU that flashes plus; nasty 89-91 cutter; 2013: 94-97 FB, 98-100 peak; plus SL up to 81-88 now; holds his velocity beautifully, 95-98 FB; solid 81-84 CU, average for most; strong; FAVORITE; update: 95-99 FB; 84-88 SL; 81-84 CU; 6-4, 240 pounds (2012: 9.56 K/9 | 3.51 BB/9 | 3.37 FIP | 102.2 IP) (2013: 10.55 K/9 | 1.72 BB/9 | 2.83 FIP | 110 IP)
- Stanford JR RHP Mark Appel: sits 93-97 with four-seamer, hitting 99; holds velocity late: still at 94-95 in ninth innings; all FBs typically between 90-95; 88-92 two-seam FB with excellent sink; excellent FB command, but gets in trouble with too many hitter’s strikes – almost a little bit of a great control vs. good command situation; FB also gets in trouble at higher velocity when it flattens out and comes in too straight, especially when he forgets about two-seamer; sat consistently 96-98 with FB in summer 2011; easiest high velocity arm in class by a wide margin; rarely dips below 92; opening start 2012: 91-95 FB, 97 peak; above-average 82-84 SL that remains inconsistent; low-80s CU; for me, he’s at his best when he is 92-94 with plus sink and throwing lots of SL, sometimes gets too dependent on FB and overthrows it causing him to miss up in the zone; as the spring moved on, his SL improved considerably, though it lacks the sharpness and break of a true SL (it is more of a hybrid-breaking ball at this point) – now it is a more consistent, though still not reliable, 82-85 pitch with plus upside that can reach even higher (86-87 when he rears back); 80-85 circle CU with very good sink is currently an average big league pitch with plus upside – it is currently his best swing and miss pitch and my favorite of his offspeed offerings; can get in trouble showing too much of the ball in his delivery; no denying his raw stuff – taken individually, each pitch grades out as above-average to plus down the line, but the inability to throw all three pitches for strikes on any given day continues to be his downfall; downfall is, of course, relative – he still has the upside to be a frontline starter with the realistic floor of big league innings eater; 2013: 92-96 FB, 97-98 peak; plus 83-88 SL; really good 81-85 CU, flashes plus to plus-plus; might be crazy, but strikes me as guy who will never be as good as he should be (sum of parts don’t add up to whole); FB is just too damn straight to me; 6-5, 215 pounds (2011: 7.42 K/9 | 110.1 IP) (2012: 10.06 K/9 | 1.89 BB/9 | 3.14 FIP | 119 IP) (2013: 11.17 K/9 | 1.95 BB/9 | 2.94 FIP | 106.1 IP)

Amazing work here. Obviously with a list like this there is going to be a lot of variance from person to person. I can’t even begin to fathom how much time it must take to do your rankings. With that said I think there are about 5-7 guys I think you are underselling a bit.
1. Brad Goldberg- His stuff has really picked up this year, even though he is a senior there is considerable upside. I think he needs to be considered for the top 100. I’m not sure if you consider draft position (looks like you don’t) but I could see a team drafting Goldberg somewhere in rounds 7-10 on the cheap.
2. Ricky Knapp- you have Conney and Bixler, the other two FGCU pitchers, ranked where they should be but Knapp doesn’t make an appearance until the 300’s. He has average stuff, with plus control, He doesn’t have great size, but he isn’t small either. BA has him ranked in the top 200 overall, what don’t you see that the BA people are apparently seeing?
3. Houston Boys- Daniel Ponce De Leon and Austin Pruitt are ranked fairly low. I’m more surprised at Ponce De Leon, he has plus stuff without question and he has the big body you look for in a pitcher. I realize he is quite raw and his control is a big question mark, but he has considerable upside. I could definitely see him as a late inning reliever at least.
4. Jon Prosinski- I realize he doesn’t have great overall stuff but Prosinski has above average pitchability. He just seems to me like a smart pitcher who will put in the extra work to figure out how to get batters out. I’m not sure how you measure that and I understand the reasons for ranking him low. It just seems like he should be in the top 200 or so. Not really a lot of hard evidence with this guy, just a hunch.
5. Reliever- Its hard to rank relievers compared to starters because relievers are already working at a disadvantage value wise because they have no future in the starting rotation. But now more than ever, relievers are integral to a team’s success and since their are so many roster spots dedicated to relievers there is a lot of opportunity to get some big league innings under your belt in some capacity. I have no solid evidence for this next assumption (just something I’ve noticed when looking at major league bullpens) it seems that there are a significant amount of major league relievers that were drafted fairly late, it would seem that the odds favor that of a reliever drafted in round 20 or so compared to a position player or even a starting pitcher. Here are some examples:
Chris Cotton- He doesn’t have great stuff, he doesn’t have size, and he doesn’t have projection. What he does have is a role, a role that has been increasingly difficult to fill in the major leagues. That role of course is a LOOGY, and Cotton fits the role perfectly. I believe there is a higher chance that Cotton makes the major leagues than say Phillip Walby. Sure, you can dream on him a bit, he can make changes and eventually gain more value than a Chris Cotton ever could. But Cotton doesn’t need to change, if he continues to do what he has done in the past his role is there for the taking. I think there is considerable value in that, and he deserves to be ranked higher because of it. Other guys I think fit a similar profile are Travis Hissong and Cody Ege.
Sorry for the long post, I’m just really excited for this draft.
Alright let me post some positive things here so you don’t think I hate your work. I really liked some of your aggressive rankings here. In particular I liked the rankings of Myles Smyth (what a find this guy was for Lee), Kyle McGowin and Justin Topa. Topa looks like a late bloomer to me and I think will be a pleasant surprise for whichever team ends up selecting him. He has a little projection left and I think he is a guy who will benefit greatly from professional, experienced instructors and coaches at the next level. LIU Brooklyn isn’t the greatest program, I think he will blossom elsewhere.
Also loved the low ranking of Ryan Eades. You didn’t bump him down too much, but I’ve seen him ranked some places as high as #6 overall. He is unbelievably inconsistent and just seems like a guy that doesn’t have his head in the right place I could understand it if it was a one year thing, but he has under performed every year at LSU. I have him ranked 21st (pretty extreme), I just don’t trust the guy.
[…] and a few risers (like everybody’s new favorite senior Jake Stinnett, ranked 199th on my college pitching list last year for what it’s worth) were not really taken into account, as this list was originally drafted […]
