RHP Dominic Savino has always had the stuff and size to intrigue, but the peripherals (4.97 K/9 last season) have not matched his admittedly impressive ability to keep runs off the board (2.48 ERA last year). He’s currently striking out a career best 8.58 batters per nine yet giving up more runs (4.40 ERA) than ever. Figure that one out. For me, it’s a trade off worth making. Seeing the 6-6, 200 pound Savino show off his newfound ability to miss bats with that low-90s heat puts him squarely in the draft conversation. I’ll throw out RHP Brendan Smith as a name to know for 2019 based on little but his impressive strikeout numbers over the year. Best not to peep his ERA in that same stretch. I know I’m supposed to like the 6-9, 240 pound monster that is RHP JT Genovese more than I do, but his control is too scary for me to endorse him as a worthwhile potential draft pick.
Can’t imagine there would be too much debate over the idea that OF Connor Powers is the best hitter of this year’s Great Dane bunch. You might say that makes him this year’s Greatest Dane. You might say that, but I wouldn’t. That’s way too lame a joke for me. Anyway, Powers has a well-rounded skill set that could be enough to get him drafted late. 2B/RHP Pat Lagravinese hasn’t shown enough pop to get on the draft radar just yet, but a team that values steady defense at the keystone and well above-average plate discipline (70 BB/43 K career to date) could show some interest in him as a senior in 2019. 3B Travis Collins could eventually hit his way into draft consideration, though, like Lagravinese, 2019 seems like the far more likely time for him to strike.
