The Baseball Draft Report

Hello

Honestly impressed with myself that I remembered how to post here.

Let’s play a quick game of good news/bad news. The bad news is easy: I’m a jerk who abandoned this site without warning, leaving more people than I could have imagined (thank you, by the way) concerned about the future of this project. More bad news: the hiatus will (likely) continue after this post. I’m sorry for both of these things, especially the former. I would have loved to explain what was going on, but I didn’t want to risk the opportunity presented to me this past year.

The good news: I’m still alive! I did get a one-line email from somebody asking “Did you die?” so I’m proud to report that I’m healthy as a horse. Not one of those horses at Santa Anita though. How sad. In less depressing news, I did have another kid. We had two under two for five days in May. That was fun. Love to have newborns three weeks before the draft. I did have a few people ask if starting a family had anything to do with the site going away. It did not. If anything, having kids has helped focus my thinking and helped me get more efficient with the time I have to myself (i.e., when they sleep) to read, watch, research, and write. So if the site ever does return, feel free to call me out if I ever try to blame my two adorable little girls on not getting a post up in a timely manner.

There’s also news that falls in that gray area between good and bad, depending on your perspective in a given moment. It’s weird news to report, but the site actually kept chugging along in secret this past draft season. I can’t really get into details beyond that, but I can say I covered the shit out of the 2019 draft in a way I hadn’t done in a few years. I wish I could have shared my rankings, profiles, and terrible jokes (had one on Dylan Thomas from Hawaii that still makes me laugh when I think about it) with this audience, but the opportunity to do things differently was too good to pass up.

So maybe that’s only good news for me. My draft coverage was great this year, but LOL you can’t ever read it. Kind of a dick move on my part, I admit. Or maybe you’re a better person than I would be and are happy to hear the site survived even if you didn’t get the opportunity to read it. If so, thanks. If not, hey, I get it. A full refund is in the mail.

What’s next? Technically, I became a free agent as of last midnight. I’m not sure what the next step is, though I do know that I, too, will not be signing with the New York Knicks. If things fall through, the site will come alive again. I missed the site, I missed the interaction, I missed having a public record of all my genius takes. That said, hopefully it doesn’t come to that.

Thanks to all for reading over the years. I will be back. In what capacity, time will tell.

Glad to hear from you again, I haven’t clicked this fast on an article in a very long time. Hopefully the behind the scenes work is going well (I’m going to guess and say you did some work for Baseball America). I’m sorry to hear that this site will still be on hiatus. Congrats on the new baby as well

Congratulations, and best of luck with whatever you’re up to. Did you get a job with a MLB team?
In any event … hope you can cover the draft publicly on this site again some day.
