Bobby Heck watched Von Rosenberg pitch a 7 inning shutout blast a towering HR his 1st AB. He did pitch another complete game and win his 4th State Championship Game. If he doesn’t go in the 1st round this year, LSU and Tigers fans will benefit for the next 4 years. He wants to win. So if you want a winner, Ante Up!

Lots of good Astros stuff here fellas, I’ll see if I can hit on some of it…

Joshua – totally agree that catcher in the first round makes little to no sense for the Astros. Between Castro, Towles, and, yes, even Sapp, you have to believe that a catcher will emerge.

AstroAndy – the Boras connection is one I foolishly ignored previously, but I think you are on the money in thinking they’ll avoid his clients if at all possible in the early rounds.

I’ll print my notes from conversations with people who know (or claim to know anyway) which way the Astros are leaning with their first pick: no Boras clients at 21, pitcher over hitter all things being equal, high school over college with regard to pitching, names that are high on Heck’s board as of now – Tyler Skaggs, Chad James, and Rex Brothers (three lefties…hmm)

I’ll echo Robert’s sentiments and ask again about the connection between Von Rosenberg’s very impressive high school career and the Astros taking him in the first. I get that he has had fantastic success as a prep player, I get that he is a top prospect for this year’s draft…but I don’t get the link between him and Houston.

Thats an unbelievable stat that he has pitched in won 3 state championships. My question is how are you so sure that the astros will take Von Rosenberg at 21st? Are you a scouting director/General manager?

That’s a very good point, Houston will not deal with Boras, or at least they haven’t since the Beltran debacle. Many 2009 first rounders will be Boras Corp. clients though so, who knows.

BTW: Andrew Oliver is a Boras client, and I think the Astros would be a bit shy about taking a Boras client in the first round, simply because they would rather stay as close to slot money as possible. And a guy who switches to Boras the year he enters the draft is looking for a payday.

Weird that all the comments here are Astros-related. Scuttlebutt around the internet is that Zach Wheeler could go as high as #7 to the Braves (who love to hold onto their Georgia boys). If Wheeler is there at 21, I bet the Astros take him…his arsenal and his build resemble a better version of Jordan Lyles, their supplemental round pick last year. But if the Braves don’t grab him, I bet Wheeler goes in the teens.

While I don’t think the Astros will take a College catcher in the first round, I could see them taking a prep catcher. Castro is going to climb the ladder very quickly and a prep catcher would take a while in development. That being said, college pitching runs pretty deep in this draft, and it’s entirely possible that Bobby Heck would view a college pitcher like Andy Oliver as the best player available over Maddox or Bailey. If Stassi is there, they might take him just to redeem the franchise…the last time they picked a prep catcher named Max with a pick beyond #20 it didn’t work out too well for them!

By watching him pitch and win 3 state high school championship games, and we will see if he pitches in and wins the 4th. Yes that is right 9th grade(CG-3 hits no earned runs), 10th grade(CG-2 hit shutout), 11th grade(CG-1 hit shutout) and now his senior year. Yes he is signed to play at LSU next year. So lets see what happens now.
